Webcam Streams, Live Video, Viruses and Trojans
Other types of webcam hijacking involve stealing camera streams. If you use WebcamXP or other webcam programs, people may be able to embed your webcam stream or video stream on their own websites. In some cases, audio and video streams may also be shared without the owner's permission. This can happen when someone uses HTML code to embed a webcam on another website. Many people and companies appear to use live webcam streams and broadcasts this way. To me, this is like using someone else's webcam and the person appearing on it to attract visitors to another website. I think stealing someone's webcam stream is a very bad thing.
If you have embedded streaming video on your website, be aware that someone may be using your webcam stream elsewhere without your permission. One possible warning sign is seeing more traffic to your webcam stream than you would expect from visitors to your entire website. This might indicate that other websites are linking directly to your webcam or embedding your stream. Search engines may also find and list webcams made available through programs such as WebcamXP. I used to make sure my webcam could be found in listings and search engines so people could find my face painting shows, cat webcams and other videos. You can also lock webcams and password-protect them when you only want to share them with family and friends online.
If your live video is being embedded or used without permission and you live in the USA, trying to resolve the problem may involve a long and difficult process. Depending on the equipment and circumstances, you may need to change your camera settings, review where your webcam is being shared, restrict access or contact your hosting provider. Internet-connected cameras can have different settings and security options, so the best solution depends on the device and how the stream is being accessed.
If you suspect that your computer has the Rbot GR virus or another Trojan, take the possibility of malware seriously. Scan your computer with reputable security software, update your system, change passwords from a trusted device if necessary, and seek qualified technical help if you cannot secure the computer. Nobody wants to be spied on or have their webcam hijacked.
Trying to report webcam hijacking or unauthorized video use can be frustrating. You may choose to document what happened, contact the website or hosting provider involved, and report suspected crimes to the appropriate authorities. Finding someone who understands both computers and internet tracking may help when trying to explain the problem and work toward a solution.
